The Three Musketeers (1916?)

This copy of Alexander Dumas's The Three Musketeers was a commissioned printing to be sold in the Woolsworth five-and-dime stores, which really began growing in 1910 and into the 20's and 30's. This printing and binding is a little odd as it doesn't contain any normal publisher markings, and if the letter arrangement on the spine doesn't trigger your inner graphic designer cringe, then you are very blessed indeed. These were likely part of a series of classic literature books custom ordered to be sold throughout the franchise of Woolsworth stores and printed by the lowest bidder. I always carefully inspect the inside pages for any markings or the occasional bookmark that might contain a clue as to when this book was originally enjoyed, and the little treasure I found buried deep within gem of a book was very helpful in nailing down a timeframe. You can see the clipping in the photos of the book. Apparently this clipping came from a German news story and mentions a famous female aviator by name and age. After doing some brief research about her life's story on wikipedia, I discovered that at 30 years of age, that would place the newspaper story around 1916. Assuming that they clipped the story and stuck it inside the book they were enjoying at the time, that would put the printing of this book to 1916 or earlier. Probably not much earlier than 1910 though since Woolsworth wasn't quite the coorporate giant it became until after the early 1900s.

Seriously? But I don't want to send you junky emails to get you to buy more stuff. What I will do is tell you about times when there are many new additions to the store and perhaps include some witty banter and fun behind the scene stories. But I definitely won't do this often enough to be a bother and I just might include the occasional discount code. Are you crazy enough to sign up?
