Alice In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Printed by A. L. Burt Company and probably dates to the early 1930s. In very good condition.
This printing has no date, but it was printed A. L. Burt Company, which went out of business before the late 1930s. See, Albert Levi Burt was a traveling sales man who saw the need of families to get their hands on affordable publishing of good literature, especially literature that would inspire young readers. Burt mostly focused on cheap paperbacks for young readers. Eventually introducing hardbacks such as this copy of Alice In Wonderland. Burt died in 1913 and although the company continued on for many years it eventually closed it's doors after the economic downturn of the early 1930s. I have found no listing for this printing and only one other copy available online. I am not 100% sure that this was a legal and licensed printing of this classic literature. Which only adds to the delicious story. I have cherished this copy in safe keeping for many years and I realize it is probably a very rare find that is in pristine condition. Once belonging to a woman named Isabella E. Mitchell, who enjoyed it enough to write her name in the front cover. I also found a corner of a newspaper clipping in the book hidden away, probably used by Isabella as a bookmark that contained a partial headline that was enough to identify the newspaper clipping from 1933, which means the book likely dates to the early 1930s some time. It's always weird when a book doesn't have a publishing date, but sometimes that sends you down a fun rabbit hole of research. Just don't eat the mushrooms while on said journey.
